Research Interests
Personal Information Management
Personal information management is the study of how people manage their own digital information. This information includes documents, emails, tasks, calendar items, contacts, notes, music etc. My particular focus so far has been on personal document management, but I am interested in all aspects of PIM.
Online Recreational Environments (especially online poker)
People spend a lot of time online engaging in recreation. From gaming to facebook to swapping knitting patterns to sex. I’m interested in all aspects of how people spend their leisure time on the internet, but my particular focus is online poker. Poker has been one of the fastest growing pursuits over the past few years, with television coverage increasing and an explosion in the number of physical and virtual gaming venues. Successful poker play involves making good decisions under time pressure with imperfect information. Online poker is more interesting because it removes many of the cues (tells) that poker players normally rely on. It also opens up scope for a vast array of decision support aids.
Web Usability
I am very interested in human computer interaction and understanding how to design things well. As a web developer and a teacher of web development, I am particularly interested in understanding what techniques and practices we can use to increase the usability of web applications.
